Ancient Music Recovery for Digital Libraries

The purpose of this paper is to present a description and current state of the “ROMA” (Reconhecimento Óptico de Música Antiga or Ancient Music Optical Recognition) Project that consists on building an application, for the recognition and restoration specialised in ancient music manuscripts (from XVI to XVIII century). This project, beyond the inventory of the Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra musical funds aims to develop algorithms for scores restoration and musical symbols recognition in order to allow a suitable representation and restoration on digital format. Both objectives have an intrinsic research nature one in the area of music ology and other in digital libraries.
